Keep an eye on all fluids
There are several essential fluids that need to be maintained at proper levels to ensure your car runs smoothly. According to Popular Mechanics, either you or your mechanic should regularly check these five crucial fluids:
- Coolant
- Power steering fluid
- Brake fluid
- Transmission fluid
- Windshield washer fluid
A leak in any of the first four fluids can impact your car’s performance. Identifying a leak by the fluid’s color can help you and your mechanic locate the source more quickly, potentially speeding up the repair process.
Keep those wipers wipin'!
If your wipers aren’t performing as well as they used to, don’t ignore the issue. Damaged or worn-out blades can decrease visibility during heavy rain or snowstorms. Regularly inspecting your wiper blades and replacing them when necessary is crucial for maintaining your car’s safety.
Consumer Reports suggests replacing your windshield wipers approximately every six months. If you notice that the blades are cracked, torn, or heavily worn, they may not grip the windshield properly and may fail to fully remove mud, rain, sleet, or snow.
Respect the filter
A dirty engine air filter can allow dirt and other particulates into your car’s engine, reducing its efficiency. For many cars, it is recommended to replace the engine air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or once a year, but you should refer to your specific car’s owner’s manual for exact guidelines.
If you’re replacing the filter yourself, AutoZone advises vacuuming your work area first to prevent dust or debris from entering the engine. To check the filter’s condition, remove it from its housing and hold it up to sunlight or another bright light source. According to AAA, if light passes through more than half of the filter easily, you can reinstall it without replacing it. Some vehicles, typically pickup trucks, have an engine air filter service indicator on the filter housing that shows when replacement is needed.
Give it a brake!
Regular inspection of your car’s brakes is essential. While driving, listen for any brake noises and pay attention to shuddering or vibrations from the brake pedal. If you notice any of these warning signs, visit a mechanic or repair shop as soon as possible.
According to Firestone, when a professional technician performs a brake inspection, they will check the brake fluid, inspect the undercarriage, and examine the braking components, including the brake pads, rotors, and calipers. All these components must be in good working condition for safe driving.
Beware of these signs
Recognizing certain signs that your car needs service or repairs is crucial for any car owner. Addressing maintenance issues early can help prevent more expensive repairs later on.
Even a well-maintained car can encounter problems that require servicing. According to KBB, here are some common signs indicating your vehicle may need immediate attention:
- Check engine light
- Any issues with braking
- Reduced acceleration
- Vibrations
- Stalling or difficulty starting the car
- Changes in fuel efficiency
- Hard or delayed shifting
These are just some of the common signs that something might be wrong with your vehicle. It’s still important to visit a mechanic or trained technician regularly to ensure your car isn’t exhibiting other, less obvious signs that maintenance is needed.
